Google introduced its smart contact lens project

TECH & HEALTH NEWS - Based on the findings of scientists showed that glucose levels can be known through the tears, Google seems to start giving its concern on health issues, especially for diabetics. It can be seen from an announcement that comes from Google's official blog that mentions a new breakthrough project  for checking blood sugar levels in tears. Yes, a smart contact lens project has been introduced by Google, which serves to measure the glucose levels of diabetics.

The contact lenses fitted using a tiny wireless chip and glucose sensor, and it is able to perform a one-time scanning blood sugar per second. Google is confident that its smart contact lens project will facilitate the diabetics in controlling their blood sugar, because many experts and parties related has been involved in creating this smart contact lens that are intended for diabetics.

Google is also trying to cooperate with the FDA and several food associations so that its contact lens product can be marketed immediately.

Although the contact lens is still in the form of the initial design, but it's been a lot of people who support it because it is regarded as a remarkable breakthrough in the field of health and just Google that can make it happen.

However, few people expect much more than that. They argued that the contact lens should be able to do more, not only serves as a reminder of the blood sugar levels of its users. Although they didn't say specifically about what they expect.

Whatever the results later, it deserves respect as a form of Google's concern on the issue of the diabetics. At least it can make users off from the routine blood tests are somewhat painful.

Currently, Google and the team were trying to put up a tiny LED lamp that serves as an alarm when blood sugar levels exceed the recommended limits.

Grape the tiny fruit, but full of benefits

HEALTH NEWS - Who is not familiar with grapes? Despite its tiny size there is a lot of good benefits for health. Many people eat grapes in various ways such as eaten raw or in the form of juice drinks and even jelly.

Drinking grape juice is the easiest and best way to make the body absorbs the nutrition content of grapes. And the most important is don't ignore its seeds, because there lies the greatest antioxidant. The grapes have a distinctive trait where its skin is covered with a protective, whitish bloom.

Natural deposits in the grapes consist of vitamins, minerals, nutrients and antioxidants, have made of the grape as fruit is full of benefits. Drinking a glass of grape juice per day is a good way to beautify your skin and beneficial to slow down premature aging. In addition, grape juice has become a traditional drink that is able to cure migraines. *

The grapes can help heart health, since flavonoid substances in grapes can increase the levels of good cholesterol in the body, reducing the risk of clogging of the arteries. There are many other benefits of grapes such as preventing hair loss, constipation and Alzheimer's disease.

“Resveratrol”in grapes have an important role in preventing the formation of tumor cells in the body, so it is very good for women who had breast cancer. Please note that the resveratrol in supplement forms are not regulated by the FDA**, so it is still in the research whether the product is truly effective. Experts recommend consuming red grapes, which it has natural resveratrol content in it.

But I found an interesting thing about the relationship between Resveratrol in grapes with diabetics. Based on an article published* on webmd.com indicates that “Resveratrol helps prevent insulin resistance”, so it's good for those who are suffering diabetes disease. If so, then Resveratrol in grapes is also good to stabilize blood sugar levels, but unfortunately the grapes has 15 grams of carbohydrates in its 5 ounces, and it definitely makes the grapes as fruit that is not recommended for diabetics.

The other interesting thing is an article that was published in whfoods.com indicates that grapes can provide a well contribute to the regulation of insulin, because the fruits are classified as food that has a low glycemic index(GI). ***

Well, some of the benefits of the grapes above, it looks like there are still pros and cons over its benefits against sufferers of diabetes.

Study: Smokers spend much money for healthcare costs after having surgary

HEALTH NEWS - Are you a smoker? If so, then you must get ready to spend much money for higher healthcare costs if at any time you have to undergo surgery.  It also applies to former smokers.

Based on a new study at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota pointed out, the smokers who are having surgery may incur higher health care costs thereafter.

Dr. David Warner , a leader of the new study says "Smoking causes an estimated $17 billion in excess healthcare costs each year just because it is more expensive to take care of these folks in the first year after surgeries,"*

Agree or not about what Warner has to say above, but it's based on a fact of his study results.

Method of research conducted by Warner and team is to examine the records of patients at Mayo Clinic hospitals in 2008 and 2009, which they are a group of adults who underwent inpatient surgery.

Study found  that current smokers were spent about 400 dollars per month for healthcare costs, it’s higher than those who did not smoke throughout their life. While the former smokers had cost around 270 dollars per month.

The high cost of health care because they are needed more often pay a visit to the emergency room and also more hospitalizations during that year.

"This is another example of how smoking has real costs to our society - costs that we all bear - and yet another reason that both public policy and clinical practice needs to focus on preventing and treating addiction to nicotine," Warner said.*

He added that for every Clinicians should take the opportunity to help their patients after having surgery to stop smoking.

Well, it is a matter that deserves to be made a task and responsibility for health experts to provide awareness of his patients who smoke to immediately stop it. However, whether smokers will matter on the study results, we never know.

All it takes is an awareness of the dangers of smoking.

Study: No health benefits in Multivitamins

HEALTH NEWS - Half of Americans take vitamin and mineral supplements to maintain the health of their bodies. Many health experts believe that multivitamins are very beneficial for health. But, the question is; Is it true that all the vitamins in supplement form actually make you healthier? Considering there are some studies that carried out by the researchers found no health benefits.

“We believe that the case is closed -- supplementing the diet of well-nourished adults with (most) mineral or vitamin supplements has no clear benefit and might even be harmful,” concluded the authors of the editorial summarizing the new research papers, published Dec. 16 in the Annals of Internal Medicine.*

After reviewing the evidences from any finding of the new trials, the researchers concluded that the mineral or vitamin supplements do not have clear benefits and are likely to be injurious to health. We don't know whether such conclusion can upset the trust of people to the benefits of multivitamin, Do they will keep taking it or not? Or What about the health practitioners who gave a recommendation to consume a daily supplement, Do they will pull back their advice? Well, it seems will be a fairly long debate.

However, the conclusion has come from observations in studies that can be accountable and aimed to prove following issues:

Multivitamins are not proven to reduce cardiovascular disorders

The first study  conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association has involved 350,000 people who believe that vitamin supplements can prevent chronic diseases.  In addition, the researchers reviewed 24 studies aimed at finding evidence that can be used to renew the vitamin treatment guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Turns out, the review did not find evidence that vitamin supplements can prevent the risk of heart disease. While the two other experiments found a small and very limited benefit to reduce cancer risk.

“In the absence of clear evidence about the impact of most vitamins and multivitamins on cardiovascular disease and cancer, health care professionals should counsel their patients to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet that is rich in nutrients,” the Task Force concluded.*

Multivitamins can not slow down cognitive decline

To find the truth of the people's assumption that multivitamins can improve their cognitive, the researchers did a second study, which involved 5.950 male doctors aged 65 years to consume either a daily multivitamin or placebo for 12 years. And the results of the study showed multivitamin takers don't get any influence on their cognitive health compared to placebo takers.

Multivitamins do not have a role in the prevention of heart attack

In a third study, researchers reviewed around 1,700 people who have a risk of heart attack, and then they were randomized to receive daily high-dose multivitamins and minerals or placebo for 5 years.
The researchers found a finding that showed no significant difference in the rate of heart attack or stroke, but the conclusion for that matter should be taken with caution, since some participants have stopped taking vitamins early.

Based on three studies above, then it's pretty obvious to be considered whether vitamin and mineral supplements are really helping improve the quality of our health. Suppose all these conclusions are true, then it means we have been wasting of money to buy multivitamins.

“The ‘stop wasting your money’ means that perhaps you're spending money on things that won't protect you long term,” editorial co-author Dr. Edgar Miller, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.*

“What will protect you is if you spend the money on fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, low fat dairy, things like that ..exercising would probably be a better use of the money.”

We don't know what will happen to the sellers of multivitamins, after researchers released the results of those studies. Are their sales will plummet?

Junk food leads memory disorders in a week

HEALTH NEWS - A recent study showed that eating junk food every day could give bad effect to the brain. Even if someone were consuming junk food continuously for a week or more, then it would be a serious threat to her brain's memory capabilities. In addition, previous studies showed that junk food as a precursor to high cholesterol, hypertension, and obesity. It will then continue at the risk of stroke and coronary heart attacks.

Scientists from the University of New South Wales have found a conclusion of an experiment, which they already trial to the rats that were fed foods rich in fat and sugar on a regular basis. After a week of the trial period, the results were very surprising; the rats did actually experience symptoms of memory disorders.

Memory disorders also occur in rats that were fed foods rich in sugar only, and it has been confirmed by previous studies*, with regard to the adverse effect of sugary foods against cognitive development.

In subsequent trials, scientists see memory disorders in rats are getting worse where the rats actually has does not recognize certain places, whereas the places just shifted a bit from where it was. The surprise is a disorder of the brain memory happened so quickly after eating junk foods.

“What is so surprising about this research is the speed with which the deterioration of the cognition occurred,” says Professor Morris, from the School of Medical Sciences. “Our preliminary data also suggests that the damage is not reversed when the rats are switched back to a healthy diet, which is very concerning.”**

It proves that memory impairment in rats that look increasingly worrisome after consuming junk food than before they didn’t. The study describes the presence of inflammation in the hippocampus, which is the main component in the brain and associated with spatial memory.

“We know that obesity causes inflammation in the body, but we didn’t realise until recently that it also causes changes in the brain,” says one of the authors Professor Margaret Morris from UNSW Medicine.**

The study published in the Brain journal, Behavior, and Immunity.
