HEALTH NEWS - Statins are normally taken by people who suffer high cholesterol, which is a substance known may clog arteries, cardiac arrest and stroke. A new study published by JAMA Ophthalmology on Sept 9, 2013 shows that statin drugs may foment risk for cataracts.
In 2011, a report from Harvard Medical School stated, we tracked about 32 million Americans use a statin to relieve their risk for heart disease.
While the Mayo Clinic notes, the drugs that have side effects include constipation, muscle aches and diarrhea. They may raise horrible health problems, like memory loss, increased blood sugar, liver damage and type 2 diabetes.
Today, cataracts may also occur. Researchers at the San Antonio Military Medical Center in Texas conducted a study based on the data that accumulated from patients of a military health care system, and involving 7,000 people who were able to match 7,000 pairs of statin-takers with those who weren't using the medications.
Turn out, people taking statins were about 27 percent chance they'll have cataracts, than people who not taking statins, and also the findings support when researchers detected the presence of other risks.
The researchers pointed out that statins are deeply associated with an increased risk for cataract. Dr. Jessica Leuschen, a leader of research from San Antonio Military Medical Center said that entail further studies to curtail causes of cataracts.
According to NHS, statins have been linked cataracts, but it's not yet proven. The fact is that statins are an effective drug to lower cholesterol and more helpful to reduce cardiovascular disease.
